When should I put new fishing line on my reel?

The frequency of how often you should respool a fishing reel depends on a handful of factors, like the type of line and how often you fish, as well as the conditions of when you were fishing.
Monofilament and Fluorocarbon:
These lines can become brittle and weak over time, especially when exposed to salt water and UV rays. You should replace them at least once every three months or possibly more often depending on the conditions of the water you have been fishing. Some would even say you should replace after every fishing trip!
Braided Line:
This line is strong and quite a bit more durable, so you usually won't need to replace it more than every few months. However, you should replace it if it is frayed or you don't have enough line left on the spool. You can also tell if your braided line is getting old if it starts to look fuzzy, especially in the larger portion of the line that's used on each cast.
The Tournament Angler:
Tournament fishing generally has its own set of rules that every aspiring angler will follow to try to give them an edge. One of these would be changing your line after every trip on the water. This can be very costly and take a lot of time considering tournament anglers will carry 5, 10, 20, or more rods on their boat all rigged differently to reduce down time while on the water.
